Michael Owen believes Aston Villa star Jack Grealish could be the perfect player to come in and replace Paul Pogba at Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

Grealish, 24, was having an outstanding campaign as captain of struggling Villa before the coronavirus crisis brought English football to halt and his performances have reportedly made him United’s primary attacking target.

The Red Devils are expected to press ahead with their move for the £80million midfielder despite executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward warning fans that it may not be ‘business as usual’ for the club due to the financial impact of the pandemic.

Whether or not Grealish would join Pogba in midfield remains uncertain, considering the World Cup-winner continues to be linked with a big-money move away from Old Trafford, with Real Madrid and Juventus interested.

And Owen reckons Bruno Fernandes’ opening nine appearances – in which he has racked up three goals and four assists – has proven the club can survive without the Frenchman if they choose to cash in on him this summer.

‘That’s going to be probably the most fascinating thing when they come back, whether he puts them both [Pogba and Fernandes] in the same team,’ the former United striker told Premier League Productions.

‘I think it’s taken a huge bit of pressure off him that Fernandes has done fantastically well. Now he doesn’t necessarily have to put Pogba in straightaway because there’s going to be questions about whether they can play together.

‘It might also accelerate the departure of Pogba now Fernandes is a brilliant player because all of a sudden… when you’re watching Manchester United you’re missing someone with creativity, you’re missing someone with vision but now since Fernandes has come in you’re not missing any of that.’

According to Owen, United would be wise to ‘invest’ in a player like Grealish who he suggests has a style that better ‘compliments’ Solskjaer’s project than Pogba.

‘Now he [Pogba] might just be dispensable if they get a big bid,’ the ex-England forward added.

‘If I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer I could get big money bearing in mind they’ve got Fernandes now and then you could go and invest in someone like Grealish.

‘He might have the style that compliments Manchester United better than Pogba does at the moment.’
